Jama Masjid metro line and neighbouring stations

Jama Masjid station is on the Violet Line, which Housing.com describes as running between Kashmere Gate and Raja Nahar Singh (Ballabhgarh). The stations either side are Lal Quila (for Red Fort) to the north and Delhi Gate to the south, per NoBroker and Housing.com. The station is underground and has no metro parking, NoBroker reports.

There is a second option on the Yellow Line: Chawri Bazar station, which Delhi Tourism's Jama Masjid page lists as nearest, and Chandni Chowk station, which Trip101 mentions. Both involve a longer walk through crowded lanes, so the Violet Line station is usually simpler.

Reported first and last trains vary between route sites (NoBroker lists a first train around 6:05 AM and a last train around 11:54 PM). Check DMRC's app if you are travelling early or late.

Jama Masjid metro gates and exits

Route site Yometro and NoBroker list the station's gates like this:

Metro gateLeads towards (as reported)

Gate 2Jama Masjid and Meena Bazaar
Gate 3Red Fort, Shantivan, Sunehri Masjid
Gate 4Subhash Marg, Parade Ground parking
Gate 5Firozshah Kotla Stadium (Yometro only)

Searches for "Jama Masjid gate no 1" or "gate no 3" often mix up the metro gates with the mosque's own gates. They are different: metro Gate 2 is the exit for the mosque, while the mosque's Gate No. 1 faces Matia Mahal and its Gate No. 3 faces the Dariba side.

Walking from the metro to the mosque's gates

  1. Leave the station by metro Gate 2, signposted for Jama Masjid and Meena Bazaar.
  2. Walk through the Meena Bazaar side towards the mosque. Outlook Traveller describes a long flight of steps from Meena Bazaar up to Gate No. 2, the old royal entrance on the east.
  3. For Gate No. 1, the southern gate, keep the mosque on your right and walk round to the Matia Mahal side, where Karim's and Al Jawahar are.
  4. For Gate No. 3, the northern gate on the Dariba side, walk round the other way, keeping the mosque on your left.

Which gate is open to tourists can change during the day, so ask at the first gate you reach. Lonely Planet notes that the eastern gate is closest to the metro.

Walking to Gumbad Cafe (Gate 3 side)

Gumbad Cafe is on the roof of Hotel Aiwan-e-Shahi, opposite Gate No. 3 of Jama Masjid, with the listed address 1061, Roof Top, opposite Gate No. 3, Jama Masjid, Dariba Kalan, Delhi 110006 (magicpin). The Yappe listing puts it about 350 m from Jama Masjid metro station.

  2. Walk round the northern side of the mosque to Gate No. 3.
  3. Look for Hotel Aiwan-e-Shahi facing the gate and take the lift to the roof.
